My baby-led newborn photography sessions are gentle, relaxed and unhurried and babies usually sleep contentedly throughout. I’m one of very few newborn photographers in the Horsham area who specialises in a more natural, baby-led style of newborn photography – simple, natural and with minimal props to distract. I prefer instead to focus on your baby and capture all those precious newborn details that you won’t want to forget. See my newborn photography here.
Why I don’t pose newborns …
If you’ve already had a look at my portfolio then you’ll have realised that I don’t pose newborns. Popular poses like the ‘froggy’ and ‘potato sack’ do not feature in my workflow. I simply don’t believe that a baby’s fragile body should ever be posed in a way that their muscles won’t naturally allow. I prefer to take a more natural, authentic approach. Find out more here.
I like to include a few parent and sibling shots in my galleries, whenever possible. My family photography style is relaxed and natural, with no awkward posing. I’ll simply be there to capture the unique connections, interactions and intimacies between you all. See my family photography here and here
The months leading up to your baby’s birth are very special. My maternity photography sessions are designed to create a lasting memory of this time, in a beautifully natural and simple way.
The first year of your baby’s life is a remarkable time and they change all too quickly. Baby photography allows us to capture these special moments. One of the best times to photograph your baby is between 6-10 months, when they are sitting unaided. With minimal props to distract, I’ll let your baby’s emerging personality shine. And, as your baby approaches their first birthday, there’s no better way than a baby photography session to mark this milestone than with a photography session or cake smash. See my baby photography and cake smash sessions here.
Generally in life I think less is often more, and I certainly think this is true when it comes to newborn photography. When I started out as a newborn photographer I was challenged with how to reconcile my minimalist tendencies with the posed and prop-heavy approach that has become synonymous with traditional newborn photography. Then I realised that I didn’t have to. It was possible to start with a completely blank canvas and then leave it as precisely that. The only adornment that was needed, was the baby itself.
By using a limited colour palette and with minimal props to distract, I could ensure that it’s the baby itself which is always the focus of the shot. So I sought out mentors who shared my vision and I’ve trained with some of the very best in the industry. I’ve worked hard to develop a style of newborn photography that isn’t at odds with my own. A style that is pared-down, unposed, unscripted and authentic.
And, I’ve enjoyed finding those clients who appreciate this approach too. Over the last year, I’ve seen and photographed bumps which have become babies, and babies who have become sitters, and I’ve had the pleasure of photographing both new and returning families. My clients certainly appreciate a more relaxed, baby-led approach to newborn photography. Removing the posing also removes the pressure for babies to be sleeping. While my newborn photography sessions are such that babies do often sleep contentedly throughout, that’s not to say that’s always the case but if you’re not striving for that perfect pose, then it’s never an issue. Above all, I want the babies I photograph to be comfortable and the Mums and Dads to be as relaxed as possible. If a baby needs to be cuddled, comforted or fed then that’s OK. I’ll take the time to photograph these moments too in order to capture the special bond that is developing. Documenting this intimacy, against the timeless background of whites and neutrals enables me to ensure that I can deliver a very personalised style of newborn photography that can be enjoyed for years to come.
